A moment captured in clay this sculpture captures the roughness of rocks as they go through life.
The ‘Rocks of Life’ collection started on a relaxing and very warm summer holiday in Kefalonia. Whilst snorkelling I began looking more at pebbles, rocks and stones than the fish. An idea started to form exploring the connection between the elements with each piece holding hand chosen stones from these coastlines. Stones shaped and smoothed by the patience of water with clay that has transformed by the intensity of fire, reflecting the tension of how different experiences shape us.
Pieces like ‘Standing Firm’ and ‘On the rocks’ explore the delicate balance between our inherent fragility and the strength required to adapt. Intricate carving and textured surface designs are vital to these works, representing the deep impact of change and the marks left by our experiences. In ‘Rocky Path Through’ and the communal geometry of Stone Circle, I use both heavy carving and smooth surfaces to share stories of transformation, where muted colours reflect a sense of what once was and the marks that our stones leave with us.
Many pieces are created as nesting sets, designed to hold and protect one another rather than standing in isolation. This collection is a focused window into my journey through clay, offering a sense of belonging and calm through forms that invite you to touch the bare stone and feel the weight of a life shaped by both pressure and grace.
