Service Description

Learning to throw on the wheel is so much fun, especially when you are in a small group of only four. You will gain encouragement and support from each other as you go through the learning curve that is throwing. Held on an evening over six weeks, you will not only get to know throwing but each other. It is the perfect way to have some "you time" and be in the moment with clay. By the end of the course, you can expect to have thrown a cup, plate, and vase—a beautiful selection to decorate and glaze, ready for display or for gifts to your friends and family! Your Six-Week Studio Journey • Week 1: Foundations of the Wheel — Preparing and wedging your clay, learning how to centre, and pulling your first basic cylinder forms. • Week 2: Shaping & Walls — Mastering height control, managing wall thickness, and opening clay into cup and small bowl shapes. • Week 3: Flatware & Vases — Moving into new technical skills to throw wider profiles like plates and taller silhouettes for vases. • Week 4: The Art of Trimming — Learning the precise ritual of turning leather-hard pieces upside down to carve professional foot rings. • Week 5: Surface Architecture — Exploring texturing tools, smoothing edges, and prepping your pieces for their first kiln firing. • Week 6: The Glaze Ritual — Dipping and painting your forms with our wide selection of vibrant glazes, ready for the final firing. Course Logistics & Studio Guidelines Each session provides 2.5 hours of dedicated tuition, plus 30 minutes for finishing and clean-up. All materials and a firing allocation of one piece per session are included. Firing additional pieces is no problem and a small supplementary charge can be agreed at the workbench. Please note that your completed ceramics will take around four weeks to pass through the kilns before they are ready for collection. As with all of our classes, tea, coffee, and biscuits are complimentary. If you cannot find a slot that suits your schedule in the calendar, please call me directly to discuss. • Age Limit: Open to students aged 15 years old or over. • Group Size: Strictly limited to 4 Course Dates & Times • Course Dates: Wednesday evenings — 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th January and 3rd, 10th February 2027. • Studio Hours: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM weekly. • Venue: Snowdrop Studio, Compostela, Trinity Hill, Medstead, GU34 5LT.
